Day 4: 8 Censored Books. 8 Days to Repeal the 8th

Day 4 of our 8 Censored Books where each day on the run up to our event with US author and journalist Katha Pollitt, Abortion Rights Campaign will be highlighting the 8 books that are censored in Ireland. Every book that is censored in Ireland is due to content about abortion. So check back here for tomorrow’s book and let us know what you think at @freesafelegal and using #RepealThe8th or #8Books8Days hashtags.

David Delvin
THE BOOK OF LOVE: THE HOME DOCTOR BOOK OF SEX AND MARRIAGE
(London: New English Library, 1974)

A no-nonsense guide to (safe) sex, family planning, sexually transmitted infections, and everything in between. But we can’t have the fine, upstanding citizens of Holy Catholic Ireland reading about such wicked, sinful things as basic reproductive anatomy, textured condoms or, horror of all horrors, the female climax, can we? Poignantly, Dr Delvin’s handbook also contains information and guidance on the then-emerging AIDS epidemic, a disease that at the time constituted an imminent death sentence. But Irish Censorship knew better.
