SUMMARY:Too Loud a Silence: Abortion and Censorship in Irish Media
DESCRIPTION:An International Women’s Day Screening and Discussion hosted by Abortion Rights Campaign. \nThe Abortion Rights Campaign invites you to attend “Too Loud a Silence: Abortion and Censorship in Irish Media” from 6.45-9pm on Saturday 1st March 2014 in the New Theatre\, Templebar\, Dublin 2. Tickets are 10.00 euro and can be booked via Evenbrite \n(click here to book) \nThe controversial documentary 50\,000 Secret Journeys\, commissioned by RTE in 1994\, features interviews with three Irish women speaking openly and on camera about their personal experience of abortion for the first time on Irish television. The film was deemed to be ‘unbalanced’ by RTE management who decided not to broadcast the documentary the day before it was due to be transmitted in March 1994. Co-Producer and Director of 50\,000 Secret Journeys Hilary Dully will introduce the evening’s programme with a brief insight into how the subject of abortion has been framed\, at times problematically\, over the intervening twenty years drawing from her archival research. \nWatch a (trailer) for the film. \nFollowing the screening of 50\,000 Secret Journeys \, Ms. Dully will participate in a discussion on Abortion and Censorship in Irish Media with invited panelists. \nThis event coincides with the launch of ‘8 Days – 8 Myths – 8 Reasons to Repeal the 8th: A Social Media Campaign for International Women’s Day on 8th March 2014′. From 1st-8th March\, Abortion Rights Campaign will share 8 mythbusters about abortion to continue to challenge the censors in 2014. \nPlease note that the doors close at 7:00 pm and there will be no late admissions.

SUMMARY:The Female Body in Protest @ Festival for Choice
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Female Body in Protest @ Festival for Choice\n3.00 – 4.30pm Saturday 16th November 2013 \nBack Room\, Abbey Hotel\, Middle Abbey St (two doors down from Twisted Pepper) \nIn 2013\, we have seen women on the streets and represented in the media in protest against a wide range of social\, political and economic issues such as austerity economics\, water flouridation\, sexual assault case judgement\, compensation for Magdalene survivors\, abortion rights and more. ‘The Female Body in Protest‘ presents insights from published scholar and activist Theresa O’Keefe and performance artist Amanda Coogan on methods of protest\, challenge\, representation and reflection.   Drawing from feminist practices and engaged research\, the concerns of both practitioners intersect the fields of arts\, academia and action/performance exploring themes related to gender\, representation\, power and social issues. \n  \nFollowing presentations by the speakers\, attendees – which will include activists across campaigns\, are invited to reflect on the female body as a contested site and explore feminist gestures of challenge\, resistance and dissent that may inform the practice of protest in Ireland. \n  \nFacilitated by artist Siobhán Clancy\, an activist member of Abortion Rights Campaign. \n  \nMore info about Festival for Choice here\n \n  \nAbout the Speakers: \nTheresa O’Keefe’s research concerns gender and social movements\, feminist protest\, gender\, conflict and state violence\, and feminist praxis. She holds a PhD in Political Studies from Queen’s University and currently lecturers in the Department of Sociology\, NUIM where she co-founded the MA in Community Education\, Equality and Social Activism. Prior to joining Maynooth she was a lecturer at the Equality Studies Centre\, UCD. Her book ‘Feminist Identity Development and Activism in Revolutionary Movements’ was published in 2013. \n  \nAmanda Coogan is one of the most exciting contemporary Visual Artists practicing from Dublin\, Ireland.  The centrality of Coogan’s practice is durational live performance where powerful live events are fundamental to her videos and photographs. Her expertise lies in her ability to condense an idea to its very essence and communicate it through her body. Coogan’s recent practice has been concentrating on the longitudinal durational performance presented as living installation in the gallery.  Coogan is currently pursuing a practice-based PhD at University of Ulster.  See www.amandacoogan.com

SUMMARY:Doctors for Choice Ireland: 'Being a Pro-Choice Doctor in Ireland'
DESCRIPTION:Many doctors in Ireland are pro-choice but have little opportunity to meet like minded colleagues. Our aim is to facilitate discussion and the sharing of opinions amongst colleagues of broadly similar opinions. The purpose is to provide support and build networks rather than recruit members. This installation will compliment the range of multi-media and live formats through which we invite women who have had abortions to share their experiences in a safe and respectful space. \nMore information here

SUMMARY:Abortion Democracy: Film Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:  \nGalway Pro-Choice ask – “Why are illegal abortions more accessible in Poland than legal ones in South Africa?” \n  \n“Please join us for a screening of this documentary feature which explores and contrasts changes in Poland and South Africa regarding abortion laws and their impact on the lives of women. \n  \nIn the 90’s\, Poland banned abortion due to the increasing influence of the Catholic Church after the fall of communism; around the same time South Africa legalized it\, reforming the health system after the fall of apartheid. \n  \nThe film reveals how the legal status of women is a direct result of the silencing or empowering of women’s voices. In the Polish society and media\, women’s perspectives were made invisible; in South Africa\, on the other hand\, they were invited to give public hearings in the parliament about problems in the realm of reproduction. \n  \nThe film aims to emphasize the need for safe abortions and liberal abortion laws. It also\, however\, illustrates the paradox that the implementation of such laws may have little effect on the accessibility of abortion services. In Poland\, for example\, illegal abortions are quite available and relatively safe; in South Africa\, where the law is very liberal\, women have a harder time getting information and services in public hospitals due to judgemental behavior of the health staff. Only a change in the fundamental social and cultural attitudes towards abortion\, contraception\, and reproductive health can ensure a woman’s right to choose in a world where about 80.000 women die every year from unsafe abortions. \n  \nAbortion Democracy lets its subjects speak for themselves. Interviews include personal stories from activists\, researchers\, health staff\, patients and other men and women who live with the problems every day. It is a thought provoking and challenging film for any audience interested in the international struggle for human rights. \n  \nThis story is of great relevance to the abortion rights struggle in Ireland.” \n

SUMMARY:Legislate for X Protest - Action on X
DESCRIPTION:Action on X Protest \nAction on X demand X legislation by the summer. It must include:\n• The risk of suicide as grounds for abortion\n• No more than two medical practitioners’ opinions to approve an abortion\n• State-wide access\n• Access to abortion if a foetus has a fatal abnormality and cannot survive\n• Decriminalisation of abortion \nA large majority support X legislation – shown in recent Irish Times and Sunday Business Post polls. The Dáil must act for the majority – not defer to a minority. \nAn EU conference on Gender Equality will take place in Dublin Castle on April 29. Come and demand that the Irish government legislates to ensure women get equal medical treatment to men: the right to any treatment needed to protect their lives. \nA woman needs the right to an abortion if pregnancy puts her life at risk. \nJoin Action on X at City Hall Plaza\, April 29th – 6pm
