SUMMARY:#NotaCriminal Solidarity Protest GPO 6:pm Friday 15/01/2016
DESCRIPTION:The Abortion Rights Campaign is standing in Solidarity with Alliance for Choice and the 21 year old woman facing prosecution in the North of Ireland. \nWe condemn the arrest and prosecution of a 21 year old woman in County Down who has been accused of using poison to procure abortion. Both Mifepristone and Misoprostol are on the World Health Organization’s list of essential drugs; these drugs are not poison. These are the same drugs used for medical abortions in the rest of the UK. If this woman lived in England instead of Northern Ireland she would have been prescribed this medication on the NHS. Mifepristone and Misoprostol are also routinely used for miscarriage management.   \nWe are organizing a solidarity protest at the GPO at 6pm this coming Friday to coincide with the protest in Belfast by Alliance for Choice. \nThis event is supported by Repeal the Eighth Coalition\, USI\, ROSA\, Trade Unions for Repeal of the Eighth \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:4th Annual March for Choice
DESCRIPTION:The 4th Annual March for Choice will take place in Dublin on Saturday September 26th marking the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. \nThe landslide vote for Marriage Equality and the passage of the Gender Recognition Bill earlier this year\, demonstrates clearly\, the huge appetite for change and progress in this country. This will be the last March for Choice before the next general election\, so we must make it clear – securing our vote will mean making a commitment to Repeal the 8th amendment\, so that we can take a step closer to securing free\, safe and legal access to abortion in Ireland. \n\nThe March will kick off at 2 pm in Dublin at the Garden of Remembrance (assembling from 1.30pm)\, and like last year\, we are asking that you bring a wheelie case if possible to make the effort and sound of travel abundantly clear!

SUMMARY:Too Loud a Silence 2015: An Evening with Katha Pollitt
DESCRIPTION:Reclaiming Abortion Rights hosted by The Abortion Rights Campaign \nKatha Pollitt reads from her new book “Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights”\, followed by a panel discussion. \nIn 1973\, the landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade legalised abortion in the United States. Yet forty years later\, Pollitt argues “abortion is still a word that is said with outright hostility”. Silence and stigma make the medical procedure so remote and radioactive that it’s removed from the world of the everyday\, turning an act that is normal and necessary into something shameful and secretive. \nIn Ireland both North and South\, it is anti-choice rhetoric that has dominated politics for decades now. Despite the fact that bodily autonomy is a basic right\, abortion is still stigmatised\, the right to access is increasingly restricted\, and women and girls who seek abortion services are criminalised in many parts of the world. In “Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights”\, Pollitt takes on the personhood argument\, reaffirms the priority of a woman’s life and health\, and discusses why terminating a pregnancy can be a force for good for women\, families\, and society. \nThe Abortion Rights Campaign have invited Pollitt to share insights from her new book “Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights”\, and discuss the relevance of its arguments in an Irish context with guest panellists. The panel will be facilitated by academic\, activist and founding member of Alliance for Choice Northern Ireland\, Goretti Horgan.\n \nTickets : €10 (ARC Members/Concessions – donations at the door)

SUMMARY:Abortion Rights Campaign Flashback Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:To coincide with the inaugural Women to Blame exhibition at Filmbase in Tempblebar Dublin 2\, Abortion Rights Campaign will host an afternoon on abortion rights herstory from 2-5pm on 8th November 2014. A range of activities are provided for all ages so drop on down! \nWe are taking our biweekly stall to the exhibition venue to provide a blast to the past – to the year 1983 exactly when a referendum voted in favour of the insertion of the 8th Amendment into the Irish Constitution that has denied abortion rights in Ireland ever since. For people who weren’t eligible to vote in that year\, you can come and cast your No vote in our gigantic Ballot Box to the tune of your favourite 80’s hits (requests welcome!) We will also have our petition to Repeal the 8th available to sign for anyone who wants to support us to the call for a referendum to remove this outdated amendment. \nFor anyone unfamiliar with the herstory of abortion rights activism since the 1970’s\, our interpreters are hosting tours of the exhibition every half an hour to provide some insight into the politics\, projects and pop culture of the period. Each tour will take 30-40 minutes and participants are welcome to ask questions or share your knowledge from events with tour groups. \nAfter your tour\, you can make your own paper souveneir with the assistance of our retro facilitators. Each souveneir will be constructed from artefacts from the decades on show. \nThis event is free to all. 80’s dress is optional (but very encouraged!!) Accessories will be provided at out Ballot Box Photo-Booth! \nFor updates on this event\, watch this page.\nIf you would like to get involved in co-hosting any of these activities\, contact info@abortionrights.ie \nThis event is part of a wider exhibition by Women to blame\, details of which can be found here: \nhttp://filmbase.ie/women-to-blame-exhibition/ \nhttps://www.facebook.com/womentoblameireland

The event will provide a safe space to speak out and articulate your experiences and views  as we celebrate how individuals have expressed their protest of the 8th Amendment and how networks of support and activism have formed. You are invited to share your personal anecdotes\, essays\, music\, artwork and short films about your abortion and your pro-choice activism on the night. You can submit beforehand here. \nDance and Chat For Choice \nFrom 21:00 on the night will finish with great musical acts\, cans\, dancing. \nWe’ll have a wine reception\, spectacular nibbles\, and cakes and for the rest of the night it will be BYOB\, but the tea will be very plentiful (if that’s all the B you need)!

SUMMARY:Too Loud a Silence: Abortion and Censorship in Irish Media
DESCRIPTION:An International Women’s Day Screening and Discussion hosted by Abortion Rights Campaign. \nThe Abortion Rights Campaign invites you to attend “Too Loud a Silence: Abortion and Censorship in Irish Media” from 6.45-9pm on Saturday 1st March 2014 in the New Theatre\, Templebar\, Dublin 2. Tickets are 10.00 euro and can be booked via Evenbrite \n(click here to book) \nThe controversial documentary 50\,000 Secret Journeys\, commissioned by RTE in 1994\, features interviews with three Irish women speaking openly and on camera about their personal experience of abortion for the first time on Irish television. The film was deemed to be ‘unbalanced’ by RTE management who decided not to broadcast the documentary the day before it was due to be transmitted in March 1994. Co-Producer and Director of 50\,000 Secret Journeys Hilary Dully will introduce the evening’s programme with a brief insight into how the subject of abortion has been framed\, at times problematically\, over the intervening twenty years drawing from her archival research. \nWatch a (trailer) for the film. \nFollowing the screening of 50\,000 Secret Journeys \, Ms. Dully will participate in a discussion on Abortion and Censorship in Irish Media with invited panelists. \nThis event coincides with the launch of ‘8 Days – 8 Myths – 8 Reasons to Repeal the 8th: A Social Media Campaign for International Women’s Day on 8th March 2014′. From 1st-8th March\, Abortion Rights Campaign will share 8 mythbusters about abortion to continue to challenge the censors in 2014. \nPlease note that the doors close at 7:00 pm and there will be no late admissions.
