SUMMARY:Fundraiser for x-ileproject.com
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nFundraiser for x-ileproject.com with:\nSeptember Girls (facebook.com/septembergirls)\nSissy (facebook.com/sissydublin)\nM(h)aol (facebook.com/mhaol)\nAlien She (facebook.com/aliensheband)\nDJ Domino Whisker \nBello Bar\, Dublin\nSaturday August 20th at 8pm\n€5 entry\, all proceeds go to x-ileproject.com \nThe X-ile Project:\nX-ile project is an ongoing online gallery of women* who have accessed abortion services outside of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Our objective is to give a much-needed face to women* who have effectively been exiled and ignored due to unduly restrictive and oppressive abortion laws. Our gallery demonstrates that those who choose to travel to have an abortion are responsible\, ordinary women and are members of our communities. They are our neighbours\, friends\, colleagues\, mothers\, daughters and partners. X-ile Project is changing the nature of conversations around abortion from the grassroots up. We believe that abortion rights and the corresponding discussions should be led by the women affected\, not by politicians. \nIn recent times several women have come forward through various media outlets to share their abortion stories. X-ile Project builds on the important work undertaken by such women. We believe that it is vital to strengthen links between women who have travelled for abortion services\, and to present such women as one cohesive group and as members of our community. Our website launched on 10 December 2015 with our first group of 11 photographs. Our second group of photographs was launched on 23 February 2016. The third group of photographs was launched on 9 June 2016. We continue to seek participants for our online gallery into the foreseeable future.\nIt is the time to confront the abortion issue in Ireland and Northern Ireland\, and to build toward a more progressive future where women are heard\, respected\, valued and trusted. We are committed to the destigmatisation of abortion in Ireland. We stand firmly in support of the 160\,000+ documented women who have travelled to avail of abortion services. \nX-ile Project is proud to be a member of the Coalition to Repeal the 8th Amendment. Repealing the 8th Amendment is vital for all women in Ireland who require abortion services\, especially women who cannot travel for various reasons including lack of means\, migrant or refugee status\, disability\, or personal circumstances. \nX-ile Project is a grassroots organisation that runs on an entirely volunteer basis and is not funded by any outside organisation. \n*X-ile Project is inclusive of trans men and non binary people.

SUMMARY:Not a Criminal Solidarity Rally
DESCRIPTION:On 27th April a woman in Northern Ireland is up in court\, charged with procuring abortion pills for her teenage daughter. This is the second woman in a month who will be prosecuted under the archaic Offenses Against the Person Act of 1861. \n \n\nThe pills she bought\, Mifepristone and Misoprostol are on the World Health Organization’s list of essential drugs; these drugs are not poison. These are the same drugs used for medical abortions in the rest of the UK. \n\nWe stand in solidarity with the women in Northern Ireland and ask people to attend a rally to show support. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Amnesty UCD Screening of Vessel
DESCRIPTION:Amnesty Soc UCD are screening ‘Vessel’\, the 2014 documentary film with an introduction by a member of the Abortion Rights Campaign.\nVessel begins with a young doctor who lived by the sea\, and an unlikely idea.  Rebecca Gomperts\, horrified by the realities created by anti-abortion law around the world\, felt compelled to challenge this.  Her method: to provide abortions on a ship in offshore waters. \nHer project\, Women on Waves\, begins as flawed spectacle\, a media frenzy\, faced with governmental\, religious\, and military blockades.  But with each setback comes a more refined mission\, until Rebecca has the revelation that she can use new technologies to bypass law – and train women to give themselves safe abortions using WHO-sanctioned protocols with pills. \nWe witness the creation of an underground network of emboldened\, informed activists\, working at the cutting edge of global reproductive rights\, who trust women to handle abortion themselves. Vessel is Rebecca’s story: one of a woman who heard and answered a calling\, and transformed a wildly improbable idea into a global movement.

SUMMARY:#NotaCriminal Solidarity Protest GPO 6:pm Friday 15/01/2016
DESCRIPTION:The Abortion Rights Campaign is standing in Solidarity with Alliance for Choice and the 21 year old woman facing prosecution in the North of Ireland. \nWe condemn the arrest and prosecution of a 21 year old woman in County Down who has been accused of using poison to procure abortion. Both Mifepristone and Misoprostol are on the World Health Organization’s list of essential drugs; these drugs are not poison. These are the same drugs used for medical abortions in the rest of the UK. If this woman lived in England instead of Northern Ireland she would have been prescribed this medication on the NHS. Mifepristone and Misoprostol are also routinely used for miscarriage management.   \nWe are organizing a solidarity protest at the GPO at 6pm this coming Friday to coincide with the protest in Belfast by Alliance for Choice. \nThis event is supported by Repeal the Eighth Coalition\, USI\, ROSA\, Trade Unions for Repeal of the Eighth \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:4th Annual March for Choice
DESCRIPTION:The 4th Annual March for Choice will take place in Dublin on Saturday September 26th marking the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. \nThe landslide vote for Marriage Equality and the passage of the Gender Recognition Bill earlier this year\, demonstrates clearly\, the huge appetite for change and progress in this country. This will be the last March for Choice before the next general election\, so we must make it clear – securing our vote will mean making a commitment to Repeal the 8th amendment\, so that we can take a step closer to securing free\, safe and legal access to abortion in Ireland. \n\nThe March will kick off at 2 pm in Dublin at the Garden of Remembrance (assembling from 1.30pm)\, and like last year\, we are asking that you bring a wheelie case if possible to make the effort and sound of travel abundantly clear!

SUMMARY:Too Loud a Silence 2015: An Evening with Katha Pollitt
DESCRIPTION:Reclaiming Abortion Rights hosted by The Abortion Rights Campaign \nKatha Pollitt reads from her new book “Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights”\, followed by a panel discussion. \nIn 1973\, the landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade legalised abortion in the United States. Yet forty years later\, Pollitt argues “abortion is still a word that is said with outright hostility”. Silence and stigma make the medical procedure so remote and radioactive that it’s removed from the world of the everyday\, turning an act that is normal and necessary into something shameful and secretive. \nIn Ireland both North and South\, it is anti-choice rhetoric that has dominated politics for decades now. Despite the fact that bodily autonomy is a basic right\, abortion is still stigmatised\, the right to access is increasingly restricted\, and women and girls who seek abortion services are criminalised in many parts of the world. In “Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights”\, Pollitt takes on the personhood argument\, reaffirms the priority of a woman’s life and health\, and discusses why terminating a pregnancy can be a force for good for women\, families\, and society. \nThe Abortion Rights Campaign have invited Pollitt to share insights from her new book “Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights”\, and discuss the relevance of its arguments in an Irish context with guest panellists. The panel will be facilitated by academic\, activist and founding member of Alliance for Choice Northern Ireland\, Goretti Horgan.\n \nTickets : €10 (ARC Members/Concessions – donations at the door)
