DESCRIPTION:Abortion Rights Campaign Clare is excited to announce that Jon O’Brien\, President of Catholics for Choice (CFC)\, will be the keynote speaker at an abortion information evening in Ennis on 19th February. This major public event\, at 7pm at the Old Ground Hotel\, will launch Abortion Rights Campaign Clare’s campaign to Repeal the 8th Amendment.  \nCFC was founded in 1973 to serve as a voice for Catholics who believe the Catholic tradition supports a woman’s moral and legal right to follow her conscience in matters of sexuality and reproductive health. CFC advocates for a world where abortion is safe\, legal and truly accessible.  \nIn a recent Irish Times article\, Jon O’Brien wrote: “Irish Catholics stand by women and trust them to be moral agents of their own lives. It is important that Catholic voices be heard – because so many of us know in our hearts that repealing the Eighth Amendment is the right thing to do.”  \nAlso speaking will be Jenni Owen Thomas of Parents for Choice in Pregnancy and Childbirth\, who argue that people should become parents by choice\, and not because they have no other option. Jenni will speak about how the 8th Amendment affects parents and families in Ireland.  \nSuzanne Leen and Michelle May from AIMS Ireland (Association for Improvements in the Maternity Services) will give a joint presentation about the adverse effects of the 8th Amendment on maternity services in Ireland. AIMS Ireland campaigns for and promotes informed choice and autonomy for women in all realms of maternal health.  \nA member of Abortion Rights Clare will update on the group’s first year of activity\, and will look ahead to plans for campaigning in the run-up to the referendum in May/June to Repeal the 8th Amendment.  \nFinally\, the discussion will be opened up to the floor during a Question & Answer session. Thank you! \n.~ Free event\, booking essential ~ \nHave you wanted to find out more about 49B Leinster Road\, the last house owned by Countess Markievicz; as well as the former residences of many other early 20th century Irish suffragettes and revolutionaries in Rathmines\, Dublin?  \nTime Travellers for Choice of the Abortion Rights Campaign are thrilled to announce the first in a series of historical walking tours commemorating the centenary of Irish and British women gaining the right to vote\, through the Representation of the People Act of 1918. The suffrage movement of the late 19th century and early 20th century led the way to modern feminism and campaigns for bodily autonomy which include abortion rights; we believe it is important to remember our predecessors in the campaign for gender equality\, and to encourage ongoing conversations about human rights and reproductive rights.  \nThe 4th of February this year is the 150th birthday of Countess Markievicz\, prominent suffragette and leading figure in the history of Irish independence; and we would like to use this occasion to talk about her residence at 49B Leinster Road in Rathmines Dublin\, where she lived from 1912.  \nWe are also going to walk to the former residences of other revolutionary Irish women and comrades who lived in the neighbourhood\, including Hanna and Francis Sheehy Skeffington\, Grace and Muriel Gifford\, Madeline ffrench-Mullen\, Kathleen Lynn\, Mary Christina Doyle\, and James Connolly. As well as the abortion clinic run by Mamie Cadden\, the controversial Irish backstreet abortionist during the 1930s-1950s\, whose story is being adapted for the stage by the theatre company Idir Mná and is due to open in April this year with funding from the Irish Arts Council. \nMEETING POINT & ROUTE:\nWe will meet at 2pm outside the Rathmines Library\, and our provisional route is Rathmines Library – Leinster Road – Grosvenor Place – Belgrave Road. The tour will be about 60 – 90 minutes and we plan to head indoors afterwards for chats and cake.  \nPlease wear comfortable and warm clothes and shoes. Now it’s our turn to fight and vote for bodily autonomy by repealing the 8th.  \nTo commemorate the centenary of women’s suffrage in Ireland and Britain and Countess Markievicz’s 150th birthday\, Galway Pro-Choice and Time Travellers for Choice will be holding a historical stall on shop street.  \n1918 was the first time that women in Ireland were permitted by law to vote and stand in parliamentary elections. It was also the year in which the first woman was elected to the British Parliament at Westminster\, Countess de Markievicz\, she never took her seat at Westminster. Instead\, she joined the revolutionary first Dáil\, becoming the first female TD.  \nYou will see us at our stall this Saturday on Shop Street in period themed clothing. We hope that you come by to say hi\, have a chat\, and learn more about our fight for reproductive rights in Ireland!
