Would you like to hear the stories of others in an intimate\, supportive environment? If so\, come along to Abortion Rights Campaign 2017 Speak Out co-hosted by ChoiceBox. \nAll year\, we hear politicians\, media workers and others who call themselves experts talk about a subject they have no direct experience of. This event is entirely dedicated to the voices of abortion seekers of all ages who have been silenced or censored. The Speak Out is an opportunity to connect with experiences like yours and support one another in our everyday attempts to work towards change in Ireland. We do not tell our stories as victims but as survivors and change makers. This event will be celebratory in tone and will close with creative contributions by live performers. \nActivist and media works curated by Siobhán Clancy and Eimear Sparks will also be showcased at the event. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?\nThis is an all ages event however minors (under 18 year olds) must be accompanied by a guardian or parent. Please be aware that some stories told on the night may contain adult themes and include accounts of sexual violence. \n2. Do I need to bring anything with me?\nJust your listening ears and your speaking mouth …and a friend if you wish. There is no obligation to speak at this event but we ask that everyone show respect by listening to those that choose to. \n3. Can I tell my story if I regret my abortion?\nPeople who have had abortions describe having many feelings afterwards such as relief\, anxiety\, contentment\, sadness\, numbness or\, depending on the circumstances\, sometimes regret. We ask participants to show respect for all choices and do not question\, undermine or challenge any of the decisions made by any individual or group verbally or otherwise. Any person(s) attempting to do so will be asked to leave. If you have any qualms\, go to FAQ 7. \n4.What if I start to feel upset when I tell my story?\nMany people feel a range of emotions when telling their own personal story. Some of us have cried. None of us have minded. This is a safe space to talk openly in. There is always a neighbour to hug\, hold a hand\, offer a tissue or smile encouragement. There will be a number of facilitators on hand who can bring you to a separate space for some time out\, a breathe of air or a chat at any time that you feel like it. If you have any qualms\, go to FAQ 7. \nPlease note that the Speak Out is not a therapy session and no qualified psychologists will be in attendance. Contact details will be on hand for anyone who decides to seek professional support. \n5. Can you guarantee confidentiality?\nWe will request it as we do at every Speak Out however it is not something that we can guarantee in a public event. We recommend that all participants view this event as a place to share personal stories but not private stories. We ask that speakers only tell their own stories\, not those of others. We advise all participants to use discretion when recounting the names and details of real people and places. We encourage participants to use your own name but we respect that some might choose to remain anonymous. If you have any qualms\, go to FAQ 7. \n6. How do I know this will really be a safe space to tell my story?\nThis event will observe a Code of Conduct to which all participants will be asked to adhere from the beginning of the event. Anyone who does not will be asked to leave. We ask that any participant who has a concern raise it with one or more of the event facilitators to deal with before or during the event. This all sounds very intense! \nIn every Speak Out we have ever hosted since starting in 2013\, there have been far more smiles than tears. Past participants have given very positive feedback. Here is a testimony from one participant about her first Speak Out experience: \n“I never thought I’d share my story in public until suddenly it felt like the most natural thing to do when I attended the first Abortion Rights Campaign Speak Out after hearing so many others speak. And the support I felt in the room when I finally did has given me the confidence to feel like I could talk about it at any time to any one after that.”  ̶  Siobhán \n8. Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?\nYou can show proof of purchase on your phone or other digital device if you don’t have a printed ticket. \n9. Can I cancel my ticket?\nYes. Is this event accessible?\nThe venue for this event is wheelchair accessible. \nMany Abortion Rights Campaign members are trained in sighted guiding and will be happy to provide assistance at this event however pre-booking at least 48 hours in advance is essential. \nUnfortunately\, we cannot guarantee sign language interpretation. DESCRIPTION:Wicklow Pro Choice are getting together for a poster making morning on Saturday September 23rd.  \nWe’ll be meeting as a pro-choice community in Common Ground Bray to get crafty\, making posters for the 6th Annual March for Choice on September 30th. This is going to be the biggest and most important march yet\, so we need to make it the most colourful!  \nWe’re proud that this is our first family friendly event\, so all ages are welcome.  \nIf this is your first event with Wicklow Pro Choice it’s a great place to start. Stop by anytime between 10 am and 1pm to say hi\, get ideas for your own placard\, or work on some ideas with like-minded folk.  \nWe’ll need some materials to get going\, so if you’re coming down please bring any of the following if you can:  \n– paper\n– card\n– cardboard boxes\n– pencils \n– paint\n– brushes \n– newspaper \n– craft knives (for stencils) \n– cereal boxes (for stencils) \n– rulers \n– glue \n– glitter!! \n…and anything else you might need for your poster  \nIf you have any ideas that you’d like to share\, please post them on the event page.  \nWe’re delighted that Common Ground\, Bray can host us for this event. DESCRIPTION:Tipp for Choice are getting ready for March for Choice! We’re hosting a banner-making session in Cashel at 3pm on Saturday 9th September\, followed by a public action at 5pm. All prochoice people are welcome\, and it will be a child-friendly session and event. The maker session will be held at a member’s house so pm or email us for directions. Bring ideas and any stray craft materials in the Tipp colours that you have lying about! We’ll also supply a variety of items to work on\, from paper craft to crochet – please bring needles & wool if you have it. DESCRIPTION:The London Irish Abortion Rights Campaign is delighted to announce that the A & B crowd-justice campaign has been granted an extension.  \nWe are now just £1\,700 from covering the legal costs of a brave mother and daughter who are committed to bringing their case to the European Court of Human Rights.  \nSo get a team together and join us for a second night of fun and fundraising for A and B! \nTuesday 8th August. \nDoors: 6.30pm\nQuiz: 7.15pm  \nLocation: Theodore Bullfrog\, 28 John Adam St\, Charing Cross\, London WC2N 6HL \n\nSuggested donation of £10 per person. Maximum team size 6.  \nCompéred by some of the fantastic women who are part of our campaign\, you’ll have a chance to win prizes throughout the evening with our raffle! \nExtra prize on the night for the best team name! \nSpaces are limited. To register your team name and members\, please post in this event. \nAll funds raised will go towards fighting for equality for the people of Northern Ireland and supporting all those forced to travel to obtain abortions across these islands.  \nMore information about A and B: \nIn 2012\, a young woman\, aged 15\, had to travel to England with her mother to access abortion services that she was unable to access in Northern Ireland. She was also barred from accessing NHS abortion services in England and her only option was to pay for the services of a private clinic. We are calling the young woman “A” and her mother “B” to protect their identities. The experience was deeply traumatic for A\, who was 15 at the time\, and was made worse by the stress of B having to raise nearly £1000 as they had limited income (they were fortunate in obtaining some financial help from the (wonderful) Abortion Support Network). A&B feel very strongly that women from Northern Ireland should not have to suffer such devastating experiences. \nA and B now wish to make a prompt application to the European Court of Human Rights after their appeal to the Supreme Court was narrowly dismissed on 14 June 2017. They are calling on the support of the community to help them pay for the legal expenses of bringing their case to Strasbourg. The case raises important issues on reproductive rights of women from Northern Ireland who are UK citizens but face discrimination when trying to access abortion services in England. \nDespite the government’s recent decision to fund NHS abortions in England for Northern Irish women\, it is important for A and B to continue their fight to the ECHR.\n– A and B are entitled to compensation for the discrimination they have suffered\, and the stress and anxiety caused to them. \n– A and B’s case is that women from Northern Ireland have a fundamental right not to be discriminated against in the provision of abortion services by the NHS in England\, and their access to services should not be dependent on the whim of the Government of the day. \n– It is now more important than ever that the Government’s justification\, used to persuade the Supreme Court\, is carefully examined\, as the Government has completely abandoned it. That ruling may have repercussions in many other areas. \n– Little is known about the details of the deal – A and B want to ensure that other women from Northern Ireland have a meaningful way of accessing funding. It remains unclear whether Northern Irish women will continue to be blocked from NHS hospitals in England; and whether they will be able to access the promised funding ‘up front’.
